CAPE TOWN - Some residents of Riverlands just outside Malmesbury whose homes have been badly affected by floods, say they've fallen victim to burglaries since they left their homes.

At least 50 homes have been flooded after heavy floods swept through the region last week leaving more than 200 people destitute.

Some of the people are being accommodated at a local community centre, a church, and with relatives.

Calister September, who turned 46-years-old on Thursday, said that not only was his home damaged by flooding, but thieves also broke in while he was taking shelter with relatives.

"We're in a situation, we've lost everything. But they came here and stole everything that was left."

September said that he had no reason to celebrate his birthday.

"I'm 46-years-old today and I was going to celebrate my birthday, but I cannot because there's nothing left."

The area has also been without running water for exactly a week.
