Khalid bin Mohsen Shaari (33) from Jazan, Saudi Arabia was the heaviest person in the world with the highest recorded BMI.

The bedridden Shaari was near death because of 'extreme obesity', according to a health professional.

The world's formerly heaviest man, who weighed over 610 kg, underwent a life-altering transformation and now weighs 68 kg, losing a staggering 542kg, almost 89% of his body weight.

Shaari caught the attention of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah.

The King arranged for Shaari to be airlifted and transported from his hometown in Jazan to King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh and arranged for Khalid to receive top-tier medical care at no cost, which included gastric bypass surgery.

A team of 30 medical professionals was assembled to develop rigorous treatment and lifestyle changes, including physiotherapy, regular exercise, and a diet shift.

From reports last year, it's understood that Shaari brought his weight down to 63.5 kilograms.

Shaari's transformation is recognised as the biggest weight loss ever documented.

Shaari remained optimistic throughout his weight loss journey and earned the nickname of 'the smiling man' from the medical staff.
