Bongani Bingwa interviews Clayton Monyela, Spokesperson at the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).

Listen below.

A South African woman residing in Croatia, who was allegedly assaulted by three men, is on her way home with her child after being evacuated by DIRCO.

This follows a viral video in which she pleaded desperately for help.

According to reports, Basetsana Horing initially couldn't return to South Africa because her son, born in Croatia, required a visa.

Horing, who had been married to a Croatian and living in the country for years, left her marital home and rented an apartment after allegedly enduring domestic abuse.

Monyela says he became aware of the situation after concerned South Africans shared the video on X.

"It was absolutely shocking."

After viewing the 'shocking' footage, he reached out to Horing on behalf of the Department to offer assistance.

However, he faced the challenge of not having an embassy in Croatia to provide immediate support.

"Eventually we got hold of her and she narrated the story of how she suffered abuse at the hand of her husband."
- Clayton Monyela, Spokesperson – DIRCO

Monyela says that the Department advised Horing to leave Croatia and travel to Budapest, where South Africa has an embassy that could assist her.

He confirms that Horing will arrive in South Africa today (15 August).

"We're quite happy that we were able to intervene."
