JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said the arts have played an important role in the country's fight for liberation.

Mbalula said this industry was pioneered by the likes of veteran actress, Connie Chiume.

He made the remarks at Chiume's funeral service at the Oasis of Life Family Church in Daveyton.

Chiume died last week in hospital following a medical procedure.

She rose to fame in the early '80s and starred in fan-favorite shows like Zone 14, Gomora, and the international blockbuster Black Panther.

Mbalula said the industry had played a role in shaping the nation.

“This industry has shaped our nation as it is today. It gives us hope. It lifts the hopeless.”
