JOHANNESBURG - Government and business leaders have now set their sights away from the energy crisis as Eskom continues to keep the lights on.
With more than four months since load shedding hit, the public and private sectors believe it’s time to switch gears and focus on other constraints impacting the economy.
In a meeting between Cabinet and industry titans this week, challenges in the logistics sector, as well as security threats were put on the table as the big ticket issues to address.
More than 130 CEOs of companies with a combined market capitalisation of more than R11 trillion are again on board with the government to claw back economic losses caused by a range of challenges.
Despite progress made in the energy sector, the government admits it still needs to address the high electricity costs, the delayed grid expansion and slow investment in new generation.
Chairperson of the organisation Business for South Africa, Martin Kingston, said they would use progress made in the energy sector as a blueprint to fix logistics.
"What we have agreed is that we’re going to increase not only the focus but also the momentum. We set very hard targets with the president yesterday [Tuesday] in terms of decisions and actions that need to be taken."
