JOHANNESBURG - Outgoing Joburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda has listed good governance, financial sustainability and outstanding service delivery as some of his major achievements.
Gwamanda, who announced his resignation on Tuesday, reflected on his 15 months in the mayoral position.
He announced his departure from the metro’s top office following the African National Congress (ANC)’s decision to reclaim the mayoral chains.
Gwamanda said that when he was elected to the position in May last year, he was appalled by the poor performance of several entities in the municipality.
"I took office at a time when the City of Johannesburg was in an extremely bad state. Service providers were not being paid; our fleet had not been paid for, so JMPD and our EMS and other departments could not function. Politically, there was no sense of direction as to where the City of Johannesburg was going to find itself."
