CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town has given the go-ahead for a plot of land in Rondebosch East to be used for affordable housing.
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says the seven hectares of land on the corner of Kromboom Road and Seventh Avenue has been earmarked for mixed-use development.
Hill-Lewis said the next step would be a public participation process.
"The land has a potential yield of 800 residential units within a mixed-use development, including affordable housing, open market housing, public open space, and retail opportunities, and more."
He added the city is making headway to provide more affordable housing in the metropole.
"In the last two years, the city has released sites with a yield of over 4,200 affordable housing units, including in Cape Town’s inner city and other well-located economic nodes."
Hill-Lewis says the city is engaging with the national government to release more land with an estimated yield of 100,000 affordable housing units.
