World Elephant Day (12 August) is dedicated to protecting these magnificent mammals.

To celebrate these giants, Friedman tells of two of her favourite elephant sanctuaries doing amazing work rehabilitating them.

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust: they've got a new little orphan, Ellie

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust operates an orphan elephant rescue and wildlife rehabilitation program in Kenya.

The trust has taken in an orphan, one-year-old Korbess, who loves taking little sunrise walks on the beach with her carer, Joseph.

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary

Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is a Samburu community-owned wildlife sanctuary in Northern Kenya.

Reteti rescues orphaned and abandoned elephant calves.

Everything at this sanctuary revolves around milk! And the impact of each milk bottle reaches far beyond elephant orphans.

The milk bottles also support 1200 'Milk Mamas,' their families, and their incredible landscape rehabilitation work.

How can you help elephant conservation?

You can donate to both organisations or adopt a little elephant from these sanctuaries.
