JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Arts and Culture Department has committed to providing more support for local artists.
The commitment was made by MEC Arts and Culture MEC Matome Chiloane on the sidelines of a memorial service held in honour of late veteran actress Connie Chiume.
Last week, the 72-year-old died following a medical procedure at Garden City Hospital.
Chiume starred in Marvel’s Black Panther, Beyoncé’s Black is King, Zone 14 and Rhythm City.
MEC Chiloane says his department intends to start uplifting artists from preschool.
Described as a “celebration of life”, Tuesday’s memorial service was a hub of laughter, joy, dancing and singing — diametrically opposed to a traditional gathering to pay respect to the deceased.

A long list of industry leaders, politicians from different spheres of government and high-ranking dignitaries, all sang from the same hymn book, praising “Mam Connie” as she was fondly known.
However, some speakers took the opportunity to stress the need for more support.
Chiloane said his department would heed the calls.
“Posthumously we will continue to support the foundation and uplift the youth. That’s why I’m saying we will take it from the grassroots.”
The internationally acclaimed artist will be laid to rest on Thursday.
