Team South Africa wraps up 2024 Paris Olympics with 6 medals
Here’s a round-up of South Africa’s medallists from this year’s Olympics.
Tatjana Smith
The 33rd Summer Olympics in Paris, France has officially concluded.
Team South Africa walked away with six medals, double the number from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Let’s take a look at who won these medals:
Tatjana Smith – gold, silver
It was a phenomenal Olympics for Smith, who took home two medals.
She won gold (Team SA’s only gold medal) in the women’s 100m breaststroke.

Smith also won silver for the women’s 200m breaststroke.
The final 50m of the Women’s 200m Breaststroke was a display of elite Breaststroke swimming.

This was also the last time we were going to see Smith compete on a professional level as she announced her retirement after the Games.

SA men’s 4x100m relay team – silver
The South African men’s 4x100m relay team was almost in a league of their own.
The team consisted of Akani Simbine (30), Shaun Maswanganyi (23), Sinesipho Dambile (22), Bradley Nkoana (19) and Bayanda Walaza (18).
It was a phenomenal performance, from clocking the second-fastest time in the heats to winning silver in the final.

He passes four other teams to secure the silver medal for South Africa in the Men's 4x100m relay 🇿🇦

Jo-Ane van Dyk – silver
With the second-best throw in the women’s javelin final, Van Dyk took home a surprise silver for Team South Africa.
Going into the final, she was ranked 11th in the world.
She threw an exceptional distance of 63.93 meters.

Alan Hatherly – bronze
Cyclist Alan Hatherly received a bronze medal after coming third in the Men’s Cross-Country Cycling Mountain Bike race.
He finished 11 seconds behind the lead and just two seconds behind the second-place runner.
He became the first-ever South African and African Olympic mountain bike medallist.

Alan Hatherly won South Africa's 🇿🇦 first Olympic cycling medal since 1956.
He secured bronze 🥉 in the Men's Cross-Country Mountain Bike race.

Blitzboks – bronze
The South African Sevens Rugby Team scooped up the first medal for Team SA.
The guys dug deep in the third-place playoff against Australia, winning 26–19 to claim the bronze.
Having come into the Games as underdogs after a poor Sevens Series, this was a remarkable achievement for the team.
