CAPE TOWN - The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has welcomed a ruling overturning a Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) personal protective equipment (PPE) contract worth R257 million.
The Special Tribunal has set aside the contract between the department and a company called Nkhane Projects and supply with all profits earned from it divested.
An SIU probe – which started in 2020 and concluded in 2022 - found that Nkhane had made an unsolicited proposal to the GDoH outside of a competitive bidding process.
The unit’s spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyakgo, said the judgement signified a crucial step in addressing PPE procurement fraud during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"This judgment is expected to bring to an end the High Court case where Nkhane demanded payment of R89 million from the Department of Health in Gauteng. This amount includes more than R60 million for goods already delivered but not yet paid for by the Gauteng Department of Health, and over R28 million for goods ordered by the Gauteng Department of Health which the department is refusing to accept delivery of."
