JOHANNESBURG - The Energy and Electricity Ministry has weighed in on consumer dissatisfaction over soaring electricity prices, saying it will directly engage the public in the coming weeks over the matter.

The department held a media briefing on Monday to provide an update on the implementation of the energy action plan.
 
Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa acknowledged the challenges that South Africans are confronted with regarding energy provision.

He said the foremost issues that his department must tackle include, among others, easing the impact of load reduction implemented by local municipalities and the ever-rising cost of electricity prices.

At the beginning of the month, Ramokgopa announced that a review would be launched to address the affordability crisis.
 
He touched on the matter again on Monday, stressing the department’s commitment to ensure that every consumer’s voice on the crisis is heard.
 
“One of the priorities for the 6th/7th administration is fighting poverty and also the escalating cost of living."
 
Minister Ramokgopa said public participation in the department’s efforts to reduce the impact on consumers is pivotal.
