CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling for a probe into the Department of Tourism's director-general, Victor Tharage, following allegations levelled against him.
According to the City Press - Tharage has been accused of bullying, manipulation and abusing his power leading to the resignation of senior staff members.
In June, three directors at the department wrote to the Office of the Public Protector to investigate their boss for abuse of power and failing in his duties.
The DA says the allegations, which Tharage has denied, are concerning and paint a picture of a toxic environment.
"Tourism is one of the cornerstones of our economy, and it functions optimally with employee morale and welfare. Written questions will be sent to Minister de Lille to determine precisely what is happening in her department and the extent of the resignations.
"These allegations must be treated seriously by the minister, who should initiate a comprehensive investigation into the DG's conduct," said DA member of Parliament and spokesperson on Tourism Haseena Ismail.
