At least 300 new schools needed to achieve stability in Gauteng - Chiloane
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said that while the department had committed to placing every learner, the province’s rapid population growth had created a need for more schools to be built.

JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng's education department says it needs to build at least 300 new schools in the province to achieve stability.
MEC Matome Chiloane made the comment during Sunday’s briefing on the progress of the 2025 online admissions for grades 1 and 8.
The online system has received over 760,000 applications from parents hoping to secure a place for their children in the province’s public schools.
Chiloane said that while the department had committed to placing every learner, the province’s rapid population growth had created a need for more schools to be built.
"So, in the next five years, we’re targeting 100 schools that we're building. The schools that we need in the province to stabilise the system entirely is well above 300."
