CAPE TOWN - Newly-elected Parliament committee chairpersons are undergoing training on how to conduct oversight and chair meetings.
The chairpersons of Parliament's portfolio committees gathered on Wednesday in Johannesburg for a first-of-its-kind two-day training to inform them about various parliamentary processes.
Parliament is currently on recess but Parliament is still preparing its members before they return for the new term.
The two-day workshop follows a separate induction of Members of Parliament (MPs) which took place in June after the 400 members were sworn in.
The attention has now moved to those elected to chair the 40 oversight committees.
Particular focus will be on new and inexperienced chairpersons who come from all parties this time around, with parties like the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus chairing committees for the first time in their history.
Parliament said the workshop would cover "several critical topics" that are essential to the effective functioning of parliamentary committees.
The chairpersons would also receive an "in-depth exploration of the law-making processes, oversight, and public participation in committees".
The legislature said the topics covered would provide a comprehensive understanding of legislation and the importance of collaboration with key institutions.
