JOHANNESBURG - Officials at the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) say work is being done to address a slew of issues faced by the institution.
The NSFAS board was placed under administration earlier in the year after the non-payment of students left thousands stranded and without food.
NSFAS administrator Freeman Nomvala gave an update on the State of the scheme in Pretoria a short while ago.
Nomvala says getting to the bottom of the operational issues requires an overhaul of its system.
He added this will require a thorough assessment of the internal controls.
“We need to ask ourselves the question, is the resource allocation afforded to NSFAS adequate and if its adequate, is it allocated efficiently? Are the processes at NSFAS ready to deal with the issues and what do we need to do to resolve that?”
While challenges remain, Nomvala said his team would get to the bottom of procurement challenges, the late submission of financial statements, and the poor payment of allowances.
