CAPE TOWN - An investigation is underway into a foiled cash-in-transit heist in Khayelitsha.
Officers were deployed to Town Two on Monday night after receiving information about the crime.
As the team approached the suspects, the gunmen open fire.
Police retaliated, killing eight of them and arresting five other suspects.
Several firearms, including seven AK-47 rifles and two R5 rifles, were confiscated.
The chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Ian Cameron, visited the scene and said: "It clearly shows us that they really don’t hold back. The type of preparation that they do is meticulous, often of [an] almost militaristic nature.
"There is a military precision in the way that they do it and if you look at the firepower that these robbers had on them last night [Monday], it clearly indicates that they are not only experienced but very well-prepared."
