JOHANNESBURG - Reconfiguration talks continue in the City of Johannesburg as the clock winds down on Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda’s time in office.

The African National Congress (ANC) confirmed that Gwamanda was ready to resign but that more time is needed to finalise agreements with some of the parties it wanted to work with in the Government of Local Unity.

Gwamanda is expected to step down sometime this week after being in office since 2023.

A special council to elect a successor is expected to take place next week.

The ANC’s greater Joburg spokesperson, Masilo Sereke, said: "I think it’s a naked secret, or public knowledge, that we are in talks with numerous political parties in an effort to strengthen government, and in an effort to make sure the ANC will have the mayorship in the city of Johannesburg."

As talks between the ANC and ActionSA have yet to be completed, EWN understands that after several postponements, the two parties have yet to meet to deliberate on the way forward.

ActionSA will not support the ANC if it's not given the position of Speaker.

Sereke said there was still no word on the position currently occupied by the African Independent Congress (AIC)’s Margaret Arnolds.

"That one will depend on the agreement that we reach with ActionSA. We will be able, then, to come back to yourselves and the public about the issue of the Speaker and about what will be the position going forward. It's safe to say, let’s allow the coalition conversation or discussion to take place."
