There is a moratorium in place, which came into effect in December 2021, prohibiting the export of South African fresh produce to Namibia and Botswana.
Now, it seems the countries involved are considering making the measure a permanent one.
The SADC countries initially hoped the ban would stimulate Namibia and Botswana's fresh produce sector.
Speaking to Stephen Grootes on The Money Show, agricultural economist Thabile Nkunjana says a permanent ban will only cause further harm to the local sector, and doubts whether it will have the desired impact.
"The reality is... producers and exporters from South Africa are being negatively impacted by this." - Thabile Nkunjana, agricultural economist
"As much as it's been happening for some time, we have not received data, or seen data that shows what is happening. Is it their local production that stimulate?" - Thabile Nkunjana, agricultural economist
