The Miss South Africa pageant

"Miss South Africa was just a fantastic opportunity. I didn't realise that until my mom said let's try this - she took some pictures of me in the back garden to enter...I hadn't realised at that point in time what it could mean for me. I knew that it would be great  even if just a chance for me to face a big audience and to meet interesting people. I was 19-years-old at the time so I thought there's no way I am going to win it...what an amazing turning point for me...from there on the world did change quite a bit for me. I always say Miss South Africa accelerated my path. Perhaps I would have gotten there in any case but it was a big acceleration."

Where does your affirmation come from?

"I grew up in a home that I will always describe as extremely privileged in the sense of love...My mom had given me a little nightdress which read I am talented, gifted, creative, charming, brilliant, sweet, thoughtful, witty, dynamic and a joy to be around my mommy. I had to stand in front of the mirror every night and do these affirmations and we would discuss it...To me, you can raise your kids with privilege and that is love, happiness, and constant encouragement because the world is a tough place - there's enough people in the world that are going to try and break them down - but also honesty."

Outside of your career, what are some of the things that fill your cup?

"I married an amazing man...I am so grateful. I often say to him and my dad, It sort of feels like I modelled who I chose as my husband based on how my dad loves my mom...My family, my friends - I've got a close circle of friends. I try to spend a lot of time in nature...I think to me that's the ultimate luxury..."
