JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng says there will be a new Johannesburg mayor by the end of next week.
Over the past couple of weeks, there has been a lot of speculation over the future of Kabelo Gwamanda as the city’s number one citizen.

The Al Jama-ah councillor previously said that he would resign from the mayorship if asked by his coalition partners.
ANC Gauteng secretary Thembinkosi Nciza said that the time for Gwamanda to step aside had arrived.
"Investors must have confidence in us, business must have confidence us. We need to make employment. Who is the best person to lead that cohort in making sure we turn Johannesburg around and now that we all agree, we will be able to do so by the end of next week."
Nciza said that the coalition would reveal the name of its new mayoral candidate in due time.
He said that Gwamanda had done well in his one year in charge of the City of Gold.
"This is not about Kabelo Gwamanda but it’s about Al Jama-ah and the respect we have for them historically, and how they have always worked with us... we are not arrogant, we are not just about numbers, but we are saying there were problems at that time.
"Now is the time we put this person [in place] who will take us forward so that we stabilise Johannesburg and we are there."
