JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has issued a stern warning to repeat offenders at the Boksburg prison following a case of arson at the facility.
Prisoners allegedly started the fire to prevent officials from entering a cell to confiscate a cellphone from one of them.
Although all cellmates were attended to for smoke inhalation, no injuries were reported during the incident.
DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said there would be zero tolerance for unruly behaviour at its facilities.
He said a case of arson and malicious damage to state property was being investigated.
"Behaviour of this nature has to be condemned and Correctional Services is very clear that those who opt to be unruly will be dealt with as per the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998."
