CAPE TOWN - An accused in the high-profile trial of alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack has once again denied playing any part in the crimes he's accused of.

Modack and 14 co-accused face 122 charges related to various crimes, including the murder of top cop Charl Kinnear and the attempted murder of prominent criminal defence attorney William Booth.

The cross-examination of Hawks officer Edward Du Plessis finally got underway on Thursday after numerous delays this week related to an ethical issue.

Part of Du Plessis's testimony includes evidence that Zane Kilian used a cellphone tracking platform to ping Kinnear and Booth numerous times in 2020.

Defence attorney Pieter Nel told the court Kilian had no intention of causing harm and pinged people on behalf of clients purely for business. Nel also told the court Kilian believed pinging was legal.

Du Plessis said he found it difficult to believe Kilian was innocent because he continued pinging Booth and Kinnear after the attempted murder of Booth in April 2020.

The cross-examination will continue on Monday.
