JOHANNESBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) says there is no room for political grandstanding in the Government of National Unity (GNU) – as concerns re-emerge that parties are not singing from the same hymn book.
The ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) is currently meeting in Boksburg, where it’s expected to spend the next few days discussing the GNU coalition and other pressing party matters.
It’s the first ordinary NEC meeting since the elections when the party lost its majority.
Despite policy differences - the ANC says the 10 political parties in the GNU are on the same page about the job.
ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula says parties must tow GNU lines.
“Political grandstanding in the GNU, everyone will try to do that but they will be seen for who they are. What government is supposed to do for the interest of the people first, is to deliver and that’s how GNU will be analysed.”
Following reports from News 24 that some ANC top brass are frustrated that GNU partners are outperforming the ANC Mbalula, shared his thoughts.
“We are not discussing DA ministers and how effective they are, we are discussing how do we consolidate the project of the National Democratic Revolution within the GNU.”
ANC NOT PREOCCUPIED WITH LEADERSHIP BATTLES
The ANC said the party was not preoccupied with leadership battles amid claims President Cyril Ramaphosa’s job is on the rocks.
Following the ANC’s dismal election results, there were questions about Ramaphosa’s future as the leader.
Mbalula said a succession plan is not an immediate priority at this stage.
“We come from a horrible, disastrous election campaign that gave us 40% and the first thing we think about is who becomes the leader after President Ramaphosa? It can’t be. That discussion, we are going to suppress it to the moon and back.”
The ANC’s next elective conference to choose new leadership will be held in 2027.
“We know that there are people whispering - we’ll find them, and we will suppress them. You have never seen suppression in your life in the ANC, but you are going to see it.”
