JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) says it cannot be business as usual after its electoral support dropped to a historic low of 40%.
In addition to losing its majority nationally, the ANC also lost its majority in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
The party’s highest decision-making body in between conferences, the national executive committee (NEC), has been meeting for a post-mortem analysis of its electoral performance.

ANC acting national spokesperson Zuko Godlimpi said the party is undertaking honest introspection.
“So you don’t dip to 40% and think it’s business as usual. So there is a whole range political and ideological permutations that are reflected in the election results. What different sort of political tendencies are contesting for dominance in the South African political system and what does that mean for the republican cause.”
