Carl Wastie speaks to Julia Stuart, a sports broadcaster about her success.
Stuart is a presenter all the way from Mitchells Plain who previously worked for SuperSport and is currently a sports presenter for the Premier League and Sky Sports and resides in London (but Cape Town will always be home).
From broadcasting local sports news, Stuart hit her dream of broadcasting internationally through hard work... and a lot of no's.
"You can't just wait... No one is coming to find you. You have to go out and do certain things so I did everything in my control... I worked, I made sure that when the opportunity came, I was going to grab it and be ready for it, I put it out there that perhaps I was looking to do other things... and I got so many no's and it was just depressing after reaching out to agents in the US."
- Julia Stuart, Sports Broadcaster
For Stuart, the key to remain on track to achieving those big dreams is just to stay 'harregat' (that's stubborn for those who aren't familiar with this one).
"People are getting a lot of no's because the economy is different now so if you hear enough no's, you start to think okay, maybe this isn't for me, maybe I'm not good enough... and you start to believe it but then you've got to be harregat [stubborn] and be like I'm going to be the one it happens for."
- Julia Stuart, Sports Broadcaster
Stuart says doing things you always dreamed of doing starts with believing that you can by telling yourself:
- I am going to be
- I will be
- It's already happening for me
- And when it happens, you'll ask: 'am I dreaming?'
Are you ready to reach for the stars?
