CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has been slammed by the leader of the opposition in the provincial government, the African National Congress (ANC)’s Khalid Sayed, for failing to produce a credible plan to improve the lives of residents of the province.

On Thursday, the legislature debated Winde’s Opening of Parliament Address that he delivered on Wednesday.

Sayed said Winde focused too much on what he viewed as the achievements of the last administration, instead of outlining how he plans to address the stark inequalities still experienced by many of the province’s residents.

“The lack of a clear and detailed Western Cape programme of action for the seventh administration was glaringly absent in the Premier’s opening address delivered yesterday [Wednesday]. The administration needs a programme of action, not a wish list and promissory note which means little to ordinary citizens.”

Sayed also criticised the provincial administration for not responding adequately and timeously to assist those affected by the recent floods.

“The premier said and I quote: ‘The steady investment in our disaster management system is paying off’. If the system was working, we should not have seen the disasters that we did. In addition to the current measures, and to increase our readiness for any possible future disasters, we urge the Premier to appoint a Commissioner for the Environment, as set out in the Constitution of the Western Cape.”
