CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said that racism in schools must be dealt with decisively.
His remarks in the provincial legislature on Thursday afternoon come amid two recent reports of incidents at Cape Town schools - Table View High and Pinelands High School.
Winde was responding to claims from the opposition benches that the Democratic Alliance (DA) government had no plan to deal with racism in the province.
"I'm aware of the serious and concerning allegations at two of our schools and these are currently being investigated and extra support is being provided to the learners at these schools. Our priority is and must be in the best interest of our children, and not personal interests in gaining media attention."
Winde also had words of caution for fellow politicians in dealing with such incidents.
"Our behaviour, our rhetoric, how we behave as public representatives, how we take these stories forward, we must make sure we have the facts every single time, and we must also know, that in our positions, that it’s our duty to hold this space for difficult situations, not further inflame them or create anxiety for our residents."
