JOHANNESBURG - National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said they had made more than 250 kidnapping arrests in the last two years.
Masemola gave an update on police operations around the country in Kempton Park on Thursday, during which he touched on various hot-button issues, including the rise in kidnappings.
He attributed this to incidents where other crimes like hijacking or rape were the motive.
National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said that the spike in kidnappings was concerning and that they were scaling up their efforts in terms of heightening police visibility and tracing wanted suspects.
When it comes to kidnappings for ransom, he also said they’re making "commendable progress in rescuing victims and taking down these syndicates" and pointed to last week’s rescue of Gqerberha businessman, Kelvin Naidoo, as well as to the rescue of a Zimbabwean businessman in Diepkloof Soweto two weeks ago and the arrest of 14 suspects.
In total, he said they had made more than 250 arrests over the last two years and rescued more than 20 businessmen and six students.
