How much is a gold medal worth at the Paris Olympics?
Darren's got the numbers!
On Kfm Mornings, Darren, Sherlin and Sibs asked: how much is winning a gold medal worth at the Olympics?
Turns out, the amount differs around the world.
According to research by Darren, Olympic medalists in these countries get the following:
South Africa:
Gold: R400 000
Silver: R200 000
Bronze: R75 000
If you win gold as part of a team (like for the Sevens Rugby), each member gets R50 000.
These are the highest-paying countries for gold medals during the Olympics this year:
Morocco:
Gold medalists get R4.2 million
USA:
R712 000 for a gold medal
Italy:
R3.8 million - gold medals only
Taiwan:
R13.6 million for gold
Singapore:
R14 million for gold
And, of course, in countries like Norway, you get nothing - participants compete for honour, pride and the love of their country.
Meanwhile, in Kazakhstan, gold medalists earn no money but get a three-bedroom apartment, silver medalists get a two-bedroom apartment and bronze medalists get a one-bedroom apartment.
For this amount of money, would you consider a career in athletics?
