CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) said that while it noted President Cyril Ramaphosa's signing of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) Bill into law, the party was still not happy with the legislation.

DA police spokesperson, Ian Cameron, said the IPID Bill was opposed by the party from its inception.

He said their core complaint was that the Bill did not make adequate provision for parliamentary oversight and independence in the appointment of the executive director.

"The whole reason for the amendment and the IPID Bill was to ensure better independence and oversight and currently the new bill does not make adequate provision for parliamentary oversight or independence."

Cameron said that the appointment of the head of IPID still fell into the hands of the minister, contrary to the Constitutional Court ruling.

"Unfortunately, the bill, I believe, has not accomplished what it was intended for in the beginning."
