CAPE TOWN - AgriSA is calling for the immediate implementation of South Africa’s Revised Water Pricing Strategy.
The plan was published in the government gazette in June and detailed measures to improve water management.
It followed a report released by the Water and Sanitation Department in 2023.
South Africa is a water-scarce country and the Water and Sanitation Department’s findings last year warned that the country would have 17% less water in its supply system by 2030.
To mitigate the projected water crisis, the department and other stakeholders, such as AgriSA, have agreed to review water use and pricing.
The report reveals 47% of supplied water is not billed and AgriSA said that a lot needed to be done to promote water efficiency to ensure those who pay were not financially burdened to make up for those who are not charged.
The farmer's organisation added that the implementation of the new revised strategy would ensure a collective responsibility, while addressing water wastage.
