JOHANNESBURG - The South Africa Sevens side arrives back on home soil on Tuesday afternoon following their bronze medal performance at the Paris Olympics Games.
The team began their campaign with back-to-back losses to leave them on the edge of elimination, but they turned it around to finish on the podium.
It was their second Olympic medal after bronze success at the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016.
South Africa Rugby president Mark Alexander praised the resilience showed by the South African men's sevens squad in France.
“Our [sevens] team has been through a difficult period ever since 2020 with COVID. There were cuts and stuff done, and I think we cannot blame the players for their performance.
“We as administration will take accountability but you can see the guts in this team and the way the team played. We are really proud of this team, and we can only hold our heads high while they played. They showed the true resilience of being South African and we’re proud of them.”
