The demand for affordable vehicles is growing, and so is the rising threat of ‘grey’ vehicles.
A ‘grey’ vehicle is one that has been illegally imported into South Africa, often bypassing customs regulations and safety standards.

These vehicles are often sold at attractive prices but carry huge risks of legal and financial consequences.
If you are found to be driving an illegal vehicle you could face fines, have your car seized, and even face criminal charges.
There could also be liability issues in the case of an accident, and you may face jail time if found guilty of knowingly purchasing and using an illegal vehicle.
No insurance company will knowingly ensure a grey vehicle which will leave you unprotected.
“If the vehicle is stolen, you are totally out of pocket.”

To avoid being caught in a bad situation with one of these cars, there are a few red flags you can look out for.
Firstly, you should check the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and make sure it matches on all documentation.
“If there are any discrepancies you should read that as a red flag immediately.”

In addition to this, make sure all the records are in order including the original registration certificate, full service history, and import papers if you know it is imported.
You should also request a microdot certificate or take the vehicle to a microdot fitment centre for verification.
Finally, if your car is being sold at a much lower price than the market average, you should be extremely wary.
“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
