JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Education Department has revealed that the principal of Daveyton Skills School was remiss in her duties as the head of the school following the drownings of two pupils.

In April,15-year-old Siphamandla Peterson and 17-year-old Sibusiso Sibiya went to a discipline camp with a nonprofit organisation, Rising Stars, but did not make it out.

They lost their lives on the last day of the excursion while swimming unsupervised.

After the tragedy, the department appointed Seanego Attorneys as an independent legal firm to probe the matter.

The firm’s Thembekile Graham: "The principal failed with the risks of the activities that were supposed to be undertaken by the learners. She was remiss in her responsibilities as the principal of the school. The principal’s reason for not complying with the regulations is that she did not know about the regulations, we find this version concerning."
