'Damage has already been done,' says analyst following Zuma's expulsion from ANC

'I think this is the end of the ANC and when we write the final chapter on the history of the ANC, we will record that the person who hit the final nail was Jacob Zuma,' said political analyst Prince Mashele.

JOHANNESBURG - Questions are being asked about whether the African National Congress (ANC) will be able to bounce back after former president Jacob Zuma’s dramatic exit from the party.

Zuma has been booted from the party by its National Disciplinary Committee for misconduct related to supporting another political organisation during the elections while he was still an ANC member.

Political analyst Prince Mashele said Zuma had a clear strategy.

"He wants to project himself as a victim and the victimiser being the ANC. And he wanted that to play out before the elections so he could attract more sympathisers to vote for his party - the MK. He’d wanted the ANC to subject him to a public disciplinary process before the elections and he didn’t get that."

Mashele said the damage has been done.

"Zuma has inflicted huge damage on the ANC - there’s no question about it. So going into the future, the ANC will have to lick its wounds. I actually don't see the ANC coming back from this. I think this is the end of the ANC and when we write the final chapter on the history of the ANC, we will record that the person who hit the final nail was Jacob Zuma."
