As transgressions go, forming and heading up a new political party to rival the one you've been a member of since 1959 was always going to be frowned upon by that party.
To do so in the run-up to a crucial national election was rubbing salt in the wound.
And so, former President Jacob Zuma has been expelled from the African National Congress (ANC).
Madia says it's not really a surprising development given the provisions of the ANC's own rulebook.
"We've known from the time he made that announcement on the 16th December last year, that that was a transgression. I remember posting a clause from the ANC's constitution that speaks about what misconduct is."

The ANC’s National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) has found Zuma guilty of misconduct and resolved that he should be expelled from the organisation.
Findings from last week’s NDC meeting were leaked this weekend.
"Some of us have called insiders in the ANC to find out whether or not it is an authentic document, and by and large, we understand it to be."

Madia says Zuma has 21 days to appeal the decision.
"But ultimatley, it spells an end, if you may, to a sixty year career of former President Jacob Zuma, in the ANC."
