JOHANNESBURG - The Independent Policing Union of South Africa (IPUSA) has called for underperforming police bosses and national security officials to resign amid claims of weaknesses in the country’s crime-fighting strategy.

The union said authorities don’t appear to have a handle on the situation, as the levels of murder, rape and other violent crimes remain escalated.

“The trends, as they keep repeating themselves, show the current policing model we are using is failing,” said the union’s president Bethuel Nkuna.

Nkuna said there also needs to be more accountability and better planning.

“We call on the minister [of police] to decentralise resources and other specialised units such as crime intelligence.”
