DURBAN - Transport officials in KwaZulu-Natal have turned to former MECs Bheki Cele and Willies Mchunu to help make the department fit for purpose again.
Cele and Mchunu are part of a two-day strategic planning session currently under way in the Drakensberg.
The department said it would draw on their expertise to address shortcomings and to ensure service delivery under the new administration.
Cele was transport MEC in KwaZulu-Natal between 2004 and 2009. Mchunu took over the office in 2009 when Cele resigned to become the national police commissioner.
The Department of Transport said their wisdom and conflict management skills would help the department find ways to respond to community issues urgently.
"The Department of Transport has got a very important role to play in terms of improving the living standards of the people of KwaZulu-Natal throughout the province," said KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson for Transport Ndabezinhle Sibiya.
He said top of the agenda was ensuring stability in the taxi industry, fixing infrastructure across the province, and stimulating economic growth through efficient rail and port networks.
