JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) believes its decision to expel its former president Jacob Zuma is both politically and morally justified.
Secretary General Fikile Mbalula added that the party is also prepared to defend the decision, should the need arise.
In a media briefing on Monday Mbalula confirmed that the ANC's National Disciplinary Committee, expelled Zuma after finding him guilty of misconduct.
While earlier vowing to remain an ANC member till he dies Zuma launched the Umkhonto Wesizwe Party, which is now the country's third largest party.
Mbalula shows that it doesn't matter what rank one holds in the organisation.
He said that the former president might be the most prominent of those who has been booted out, but he's not the only one.
"People at the highest level of the organisation can be subjected to DC and even expulsion."
When asked about arguments made on behalf of Zuma, Mbalula claimed the former leader had no intention of defending a particular position but to create a public spectacle instead.
"He wanted a move, he wanted this thing to play itself out, he wanted a rally. Even when they were told the disciplinary hearing would be virtual they still came here."
Zuma was given notice of the decision and and has around 20 days to seek an appeal.
