JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC)'s National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) believes it will be impossible for the organisation to rehabilitate its former president, Jacob Zuma.
The party has found him guilty of misconduct, ruling that he should be expelled for backing newcomer uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party during the elections.
In a leaked report, the committee notes that since disciplinary charges were instituted against him, he did not attend any of the proceedings.
Zuma also lobbied the country to assist in bringing the ANC under 50%.
The ANC’s NDC said the former president’s contributions to the struggle for the country’s liberation did not detract from its decision to impose the sanction of expulsion.
The committee, which included Vusi Pikoli, Faith Muthambi, Nocawe Mafu and Fikile Mbalula believe Zuma cannot be rehabilitated.
This is supported by the committee’s thoughts on the countless failed legal bids Zuma and the MK Party lodged against the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) in order to get him registered as a candidate.
The NDC said it showed great determination to be in opposition to the ANC in Parliament.
It further took a dim view of Zuma’s persistence for a physical hearing while showing no regard for various security concerns raised at the time.
Zuma’s lack of participation since the start of proceedings in the matter seems to have also strengthened the committee’s resolve.
The former president has just under a month to try to challenge the sanction by the NDC.
