PRETORIA- The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane has referred Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)’s regional leader, Obakeng Ramabodu, to the council’s Rules and Ethics Committee for his ‘Afrikaner blood’ comments.

During a council meeting on Thursday, Ramabodu made a controversial comment that the DA said amounts to hate speech.

While Ramabodu has apologised for the comment, the DA said he should face consequences.

Political speech in a municipal council is protected.

However, DA Tshwane Spokesperson Kwena Moloto said these comments from Ramabodu crosses the line.

“I will be happy to moer a Boer. That will be nice. An Afrikaner blood, I want the blood of an Afrikaner. Bring the blood of an Afrikaner - I want it.”

Moloto said hate speech should not be tolerated.

“Being a politician doesn’t exempt you from the laws of the country and it is our belief the utterances of Ramabodu constitute hate speech and that is why we will be taking the matter to the Human Rights Commission and potentially opening up a criminal case. We are just waiting for our lawyers as to what the best step will be going forward.”

Meanwhile, Ramabodu said his comments have been taken out of context.
