JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa says the appointment of Justice Mandisa Maya as the new Chief Justice is a milestone after she made history as the first woman to head up the judiciary.
Ramaphosa’s office announced Maya’s appointment on Thursday night.
The current Deputy Chief Justice, Maya will take over from Raymond Zondo when he retires from office at the end of August.
Maya had no competitors when she interviewed for the job earlier in 2024.
The spokesperson for The Presidency, Vincent Magwenya, said Maya has the backing of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and leaders of political parties.
“The appointment follows the president’s consultation, in accordance with constitutional prescripts, with the Judicial Service Commission and the leaders of political parties represented in the National Assembly.”
