JOHANNESBURG - Proteas fast bowler Gerald Coetzee will miss the upcoming Test series in the West Indies due to injury.
The 23-year-old was ruled out on Thursday, a day before the team’s departure for the Caribbean, due to a left side strain.
Coetzee was playing for the Texas Super Kings in the Major League Cricket competition, in the United States, when he sustained the injury earlier in July.
The Proteas medical team was unable to clear him to play again after further assessments when he returned home. His place in the 16-man touring squad will be taken by uncapped North West Dragons fast bowler, Migael Pretorius.
Pretorius is not a newcomer to the group and returns to the Test setup for the first time since his maiden call-up in December 2020 for the series against Sri Lanka.
The 29-year-old has an overall first-class wicket tally of 188 and produced stellar performances in the County Championship in England, where he picked up 23 wickets in eight matches for Somerset.
Proteas Test squad against West Indies:
Temba Bavuma (captain), David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Nandre Burger, Tony de Zorzi, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Dane Piedt, Migael Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs, and Kyle Verreynne.
