CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has expressed great optimism over the opportunities that the Government of National Unity (GNU) presents for the city.
Hill-Lewis said that in the past, many of the city's projects had been hindered by national government.
"I told council today that I really think the GNU is a cause for huge optimism for South Africa obviously but for Cape Town, in particular, because the have been so many things that have been standing in the way in Cape Town for many years... things like land release of major national properties," he said.

The mayor said that the bad state of passenger rail services and a lack of visa reforms had also been holding back the Cape Town economy.
"We now have the opportunity, the gap, to really get movement on and rapid movement and so I'm very optimistic that we have the opportunity to do that now under the Government of National Unity. I've sent a detailed memo to every one of the ministers, setting out what Cape Town is asking for," Hill-Lewis said.
The mayor said he had received a positive from Police Minister Senzo Mchunu to work together to fight crime in Cape Town.
