JOHANNESBURG - Joburg Finance MMC Dada Morero has urged households across the metro to avoid defaulting on their municipal rates and taxes.

The city’s failure to collect revenue for services rendered to residents is said to be a major contributor to its financial hardships.

Earlier on Thursday, the Joburg Council approved a R2.5 billion loan which has been set aside for operational costs and capital expenditure.

While the City of Joburg primarily relies on revenue generated from trading services, its annual budget is also made up of projected loans and grants from the national treasury.

In the 2022/23 financial year, the city’s revenue collection dipped to 86% - translating to over half a billion rand in income losses.

Morero said that more effort would be pumped towards revenue collection, which he believes could free Joburg from its financial crisis.

"We are therefore making a call to the residents of Johannesburg to also play their part in ensuring that they pay for the services that consume on a daily basis."

Electricity is the city’s biggest revenue source, which is projected to generate R21 billion in the current financial year.
