JOHANNESBURG - Serial killer Sifiso Mkhwanazi returns to the Johannesburg High court on Wednesday, after being admitted to a psychiatric hospital for observation.
Following two separate admissions to the rape and murders of six women, believed to be sex workers, between April and October of 2022, Mkhwanazi was found guilty.
Shortly after that, the Johannesburg High Court sitting at the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court ordered the 21-year-old undergo psychiatric observation at the Sterkfontein Hospital for the court to determine whether he poses any danger to society.
During his trial, the State brought forward 22 charges against Sifiso Mkhwanazi including six of rape, six of murder, six of defeating the ends of justice, and one of possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.
On 14 March, the court found that Mkhwanazi premeditated all the murders and concealed his victim's bodies in an attempt to evade arrest.
The matter was due to return on 8 July but was postponed to Wednesday.
A mental evaluation from the Sterkfontein Hospital is expected to be read out into the court record on Wednesday.
Thereafter, High Court Judge Caseem Moosa will evaluate evidence including mitigating and aggravating factors before sentencing Mkhwanazi.
