JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that an investigation has been launched into fresh allegations of racism at Pretoria High School for Girls.
Twelve pupils were suspended after a whites-only WhatsApp group was created to share what the department called racial microaggressions.
Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said the group will face a disciplinary hearing later in July in connection with the allegations.
“On 18 July 2024, the school alerted the district about a planned protest by a group of learners which was scheduled for Friday, 19 July 2024. We understand that this was triggered by alleged racial connotations and complaints about black learners which were ventilated through a WhatsApp group comprised of white learners only.”
Mabona said an urgent meeting was held where the aggrieved pupils were given the opportunity to raise their concerns.
He said over and above the WhatsApp group, there were allegations of a lack of action in response to repeated instances and reports of racism and bullying, among other things.
“The district has already launched its own investigation, especially against allegations that were put on the table which affect our employees at the school. It is important that the school environment is one that does not compromise the right to education, and it should be a safe environment.”
