CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town is appealing to indigent households not to exceed the monthly water limit of 15,000 litres.

The metro has threatened to apply water restrictions in areas where the resource is being wasted.

The City of Cape Town said it provides over 15,000 litres of water to more than 230,000 households that residents aren't billed for.

But over the last year, the metro has detected excessive water use of over three times the monthly amount.

City bosses have warned water restrictions would be applied to households in hotspot areas - including Langa, Philippi, Dunoon, Hanover Park, and Gugulethu - that do not abide by the request to use water sparingly.

To date, 47,000 warning letters have been issued to indigent customers.
