JOHANNESBURG - Former Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa’s lawyers have sent an application to the State requesting further information in relation to his corruption case.

Kodwa, alongside his co-accused Jehan Mackay, appeared in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Palm Ridge on Tuesday.

They are facing corruption charges amounting to nearly R1.7 million.

He stands accused of receiving bribes from Mackay between 2015 and 2016, in exchange for millions of rands in government contracts.

The defence in Kodwa’s corruption case said it sent a request to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for further particulars last week.

However, State prosecutor Neville Mogagabe said he wasn’t able to respond to the defence’s request and has appealed for additional time to go through their applications.

Kodwa’s lawyer, Zola Majavu, said he hoped the State would respond to his request before the next court appearance.

“Until I receive a reply, I am not in a position to comment further on the strength of the State’s case or otherwise. But I do believe that the questions we have posed to the State are quite weighty, substantive, and they go to the heart of the case against my client.”

The case has been remanded to 21 August for the State to reply to the defence’s application for further particulars.
